Senior Quantity Surveyor Staffing for Data Centre Projects
What a Senior Quantity Surveyor does
A Senior Quantity Surveyor takes commercial ownership of a group of packages or an entire hall, running the monthly cost report, forecasting final cost, and managing the exposure created by change, delay and long-lead equipment commitments.
The role carries the contractual load: drafting and responding to notices, agreeing compensation events or variations, settling final accounts and steering the supply chain through disputes before they escalate.
Senior QSs on Data Centre programmes typically mentor assistant and project QSs, sit in project leadership meetings, and are expected to give an honest forecast rather than a comfortable one.
Typical range
£65–85K base (permanent) or £400–525 / day on contract
Core responsibilities
- Own the cost report and final cost forecast for a package portfolio
- Lead negotiation and settlement of variations and final accounts
- Manage contractual notices, entitlement and commercial risk
- Oversee subcontract procurement and letting strategy
- Mentor project and assistant Quantity Surveyors

FAQs
What separates a Senior QS from a project QS?
Ownership. A Senior QS carries the forecast and the contractual position for a portfolio of packages, negotiates settlements directly and is accountable for the commercial outcome rather than the monthly process.
Is MRICS required?
Rarely mandatory on contractor-side Data Centre roles, though it is valued by consultancies and some owners. Verified project and package experience carries more weight with most of our clients.
How quickly can you shortlist a Senior QS?
Two to three business days for contract mandates and around five business days for permanent searches.
