What Does a Data Centre Commissioning Engineer Do?

A data centre commissioning (Cx) engineer proves that the electrical, mechanical and controls systems in a new data centre work as designed, under load and under failure scenarios. They run the L1 to L5 test programme that gates the facility to handover.

  • Write and execute commissioning scripts (pre-functional, functional, IST).
  • Coordinate with QA/QC on witness and hold points.
  • Own the Cx issues log and drive closure with the M&E contractors.
  • Support L4 subsystem integration and L5 whole-facility IST.

Cx Engineer → Senior Cx Engineer (L4/L5 competent) → Commissioning Manager → Commissioning Authority (CxA) or Cx Director. Contract routes typically pay more but require project references at the senior levels.
